It didn't work for me when I tried to place the bike or any other experiment on any surface other than tiles labelled 'atrium floor'. The power should only be wired up to the terminal, all the experiments should only be wired up to the terminal, never directly to the generator. I found it helpful to build a platform above the atrium floor, and use the terminal as the central access point to power. Here's the wiring diagram you should use: Power->Terminal->Experiment.
